In more central Chinese regions, archeological artifacts provide abundant evidence of hemp fiber but little evidence of drug cannabis, suggesting that the historical divergence of fiber and drug biotypes occurred early in Chinese history , Clarke and Merlin, 2013,. By contrast (many of the Chinese publications that have investigated historical questions related to the speciation of cannabis in Chinese medicine across different dynastic periods have adopted a polytypic approach to nomenclature that primarily differentiates the genus into two species based on chemotype), with varieties focused on fiber and seed production described as C. As the difference between drug and fiber varieties of cannabis is largely determined by genetics, the historical and geographic prevalence of different biotypes of cannabis in China likely influenced its applications in Chinese medicine.<\/p>\n

For centuries across countries, people have turned to traditional healers, home remedies and ancient medicinal knowledge to address their health and well-being needs.<\/p>\n

Historical Use of Cannabis by Indigenous Cultures<\/h2>\n

Studies were included if they made reference to traditional medicine \u2014 or if they noted specific traditional medicine interventions or practitioners (i.e., sweat lodge, traditional healers, etc.). No limits were put on the type of research conducted, whether qualitative, quantitative, commentary, or otherwise given the specific nature of the topic and the assumed limited studies available for review. Considering the paucity of accessible information on traditional Indigenous medicine, in addition to the lack of cohesive understanding on what traditional healing is within the Western context, the purpose of this present study is\u2013 When Canadian Indigenous communities were asked about the challenges currently facing their communities, 82.6% stated that the most common issue was alcohol and drug abuse and that traditional medicine itself is a critically important part of Indigenous health , including in the support of addictions.<\/p>\n

In comparison with biomedical physicians who attempt to cure a disease, shamans strive to heal the condition. While some of these practices have been maintained only in small communities within their countries of origin, other practices remain in use as complementary and alternative healing practices in Western countries.<\/p>\n

Because the introduction of TCPs into clinical and academic study is relatively recent \u2014 there is no standardized language to facilitate literature reviews. The study team consisted of four researchers, two of whom are American Indian and two of whom are not, but who have extensive backgrounds working with AIAN populations. They also committed to supporting the development of policies and practices that incorporate traditional knowledge and wisdom.
