Gamstop is a wall with a door in it. Sign up and every UK-licensed operator has to shut you out – accounts suspended, new registrations refused, no exceptions, no appeals. For a lot of people that’s precisely the right tool at the right moment. But a wall only covers the ground it stands on, and the gambling sites not on gamstop crowd live on the other side of it. They hold offshore licences, answer to regulators in Malta or Curaçao instead of the UK, and carry no obligation to check the national self-exclusion register at all.

The scheme is free, voluntary and effective within its borders: once you’re on it, participating sites must block you for the period you chose. What it cannot do is reach a casino licensed elsewhere. That’s not a loophole someone hacked into existence – it’s simply the edge of British jurisdiction. Players land there for mixed reasons. Some want a bigger game library or a withdrawal that clears in minutes rather than days. Some finished their exclusion period and found the UK sites still wouldn’t have them back without a fight. Others just prefer not to hand over a passport scan for a tenner deposit.

What Gamstop Covers, and Where It Stops
